Steam works

Hi,

Here is two submissions for today. I received a book "How to draw steampunk and tried out the car where you mix markers with coloured pencils, a new technique to me. The car turned out ok, but the paper was so thin that the markers almost made a hole in it.

The cat is my original design made with the same technique as the car. It took me about 5 hours to draw and colour.

Next I think I will try my hand on a "classical" steampunk heroine.

WIP "A King's End"

Hi!
I tought that this time around I will show you a few steps in my drawing process. I'm still trying to figure out a good work flow so you should not take this as any one truth.
So i first made a small sketch of a scene were a dying warrior sees an angel. I developed the idea further so it is actually a dying king surrounded by other people and his horse. I started to draw it on an A3 paper. Here is how far I made it this evening. As it is too large for my scanner I took a crappy mobile photo.

Transcendence of Man

This scene I worked on for about 8 hours. It is drawn with Derwent sketch pencils. When I begun I had this idea that the sun ray will filter through the fingers and light up the face. First I drew the line work without shading. Then I scanned it and printed a clean line version. After that I shaded with pencils. The benefit is that I could experiment with the shading without disrupting the line work.

We found in the jungle this magnificent beast of brass and steel covered by the vegetation. My conservative estimate is that it has slumbered here for at least two thousand years maybe a few more. The builders of the brass titan is an unknown civilization. After about a week of studying the behemoth my conclusions are that it is their final monument to the perfection that is man and reach for god hood. The sheer size indicate that is was built to reach for the sky, and as it is a humanoid it is a monumental tribute to humans. The reliefs on the belt is the most enigmatic and interesting part. The reliefs depicts people of all parts of society, soldiers, mothers,  workers with hammer's and sickles etc. walking towards a flame inside a very stylized sun. I believe this flame symbolizes enlightenment. The straight ray like reliefs shooting upwards from the flame could symbolize the transcendence process.

If they was able to build this monster they may have had within their grasp the power to achieve immortality.  What ultimately happened to the builders I cannot say. Maybe they reached their fulfillment or then maybe their arrogance led to their demise. To uncover the mystery I intend to set up a permanent base here in the jungle to explore what more secrets lie under the almost impenetrable cover of vegetation.

This morning I had a foreboding feeling when I looked at the sunrise. The scene looks like the titan weeps for its futile attempt to catch the sun rays in its hand that reaches toward the rising sun.

Colour, yes!

Hi.

It´s time again for an update: I been busy and until a few days ago I didn´t have time to draw. But now I have a few pictures.

I have bought some coloured pencils and new markers and lots of different kind of A3 size papers A week ago. I started to draw a scene of  a combat between the Battle Angels and Industrial steam punk soldiers on a flying ship. I made some fast pencil sketches and I was not too happy so I will return to it later when my skills are better. Meanwhile I have been playing around with some scifi soldier and trained to colour stuff with my markers and pencils. The Elf and griffon are not my own designs but copied from Fantasy Art books (originals by Steve Sims respective Steve Beaumont)

Stormtrooper with steam jetpack

Yesterday I made a sketch of an aerial scene including the battle angel and this bad ass storm trooper. I wont upload the sketch for the scene but here is the storm trooper sketch. I did it during the darkest hours (3 AM) :) I uploaded the orginial and  kind of comic version of it coloured in PAINT.NET (great easy to use free graphics program).  I also opened a Deviant Art account with the name "JLaunila" where I will also upload future pictures.

So it's a new year and time to update this blog. I collected some sketches that I have made during the week. The theme is still mostly steampunk and 19th century and I concentrated on practicing drawing humans. Here you go.

Nurse Sketch

Hi,

This morning I sketched a nurse belonging to some fictional 19th century military medical facility. Yesterday I bought my first alcohol markers, so I coloured the nurse with them. It is quite fun actually to colour with these large marker pens, I felt like a small kid. I drew on a A5 and the face turned out like hell when I started inking mostly due to the microscopic scale. Oh well, here is the result anyways.

I took me more than a week to update my blog, so I reward you with not one but two pictures. Last time i said I would like to do something within the steampunk genre, so I did. The first one I did on Christmas eve to scare all the childeren. It is an evil titan sized Steam rolling santa that collects naughty children in cages beneath him and uses them as fuel (the burner is in his mouth). I tried to make the picture so he is about to stomp the viewer and grab him. I had to redraw the stomping foot a few times.

The second one is actually somehting that I may develop further, putting it in a battle scene with soldiers at it's feet. I will try some different colour schemes first on it. It is an Imperial battle walker. It's main armament is a self-loading steam operated cannon (it uses partly steam from the pistons and some directly from the boiler. If the enemy gets too near it uses the large circle saw on it's left side.

The walker takes 3 crewmen. 1 commander, 1 driver (aka "Walker") and 1 engine operator. The commander stands with the hatch open and can use the telescope and calculator combination to designate targets and fire solutions. The telescope can lock to the cannon's movement so that when the telescope is moved the cannon moves accordingly (10 degrees to left and 30 degrees right). The driver operates the feet and steers the walker. It requires a great deal of skill to operate the walker and with extremely limited vision the driver must rely on the commander to get directions. The engine operator functions as a back-up driver/commander and monitors the steam engine. He also fires and operates the weapons from inside the vehicle.
